Chef Hatchet is the chef of the show and considered by many campers to be Chris's co-host & "sidekick". Chef briefly hosted the show in Are We There Yeti and Mutiny on the Soundstage. (Also Basic Straining if you count it as hosting)
[edit] Biography
Chef is a big, loud, tough, intimidating man with a permanent sneer on his face. His past is mysterious, but is presumably tragic, as noted by his comments when he thought he had killed Izzy "Oh, no, not again." and when he saw Geoff and Bridgette making out "I once knew a love like that." Under Chris McLean's employment, he works as an inept (at times) chef in the mess hall/craft services tent. He assists Chris with his various challenges, and works as a ridiculous idol on the camp. Chef is presumably the only other staff on the island (besides the camera crew).
[edit] Total Drama Island
He constantly says he hates his job and that Chris never pays him (as in Alien Resurr-eggtion; he asked Chris where his check was, which Chris hesitantly says it's in the mail). Whenever he shows disdain for the things he has to do for the show, he often mutters "I don't get paid enough for this." According to Chris, he has a degree in human hunting, and during the same episode shown knowledge of Karate (or at least the basics). He also seems to have once had a girlfriend as when he saw Bridgette and Geoff making out, he said he once knew love like that. Chris put him in charge of the Boot Camp challenge in the episode Basic Straining, making him order the campers around like a drill sergeant, insisting they refer to him as "Master Chief" throughout the episode. This a possible reference to the character of the same name in the "Halo" video games. He says he had served in the war (it is never revealed which war) in the past, but the campers don't believe him.
Chef shows contempt for nearly all of the contestants on the show, especially Duncan. He has nicknames for almost every camper: Owen is "fatty" or "tubby" , Noah is "scrawny kid", and so on. Despite his tough exterior, Chef does have a soft side to him and has a habit for being in drag in several choice episodes. Chris is much more calm than he is, and Chef will do whatever Chris tells him to (though it does not stop him from complaining). In I Triple Dog Dare You!, he wears a frilly pink dress. He also was seen in Not So Happy Campers - Part 2, while jumping of the cliff into the shark infested waters after Chris teases him by calling him a chicken. In The Big Sleep, he is seen dressed up in a tutu spreading sparkling dust on the campers while Chris reads fairy tales. He enjoys playing the harp while making sticky buns.
In No Pain, No Game and Hook, Line, and Screamer he is wearing a mask which is the same one worn by Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th films. In Camp Castaways, he emotionally admires how dedicated Chris is to the show and cradles the host in his arms. He also filled in for Chris (who was hosting an awards ceremony elsewhere) as host in Are We There Yeti?; this was the episode where he finally exacted revenge on Duncan, who had frequently annoyed him throughout the series. He is the one solely responsible for eliminating Duncan from the competition. As he rode Duncan away on the Boat of Losers, he messed with Duncan's head with the mask-switcharoo when the two were headed for Playa Des Losers.
In the last episode of the first season, he is content when the campers toss Chris into the lake, but is quick to run when the campers turn on him to throw him in next.
He rarely befriends the campers, but he appears to have gained respect for Gwen and LeShawna since they both completed his challenges. His stance with Izzy is uncertain. Chef seems to see Izzy as a hindrance as he is often on the receiving end of most of her insane moves (such as getting shot during the animal capture challenge). The two of them have faced off three times in combat. They first dueled in Hide and Be Sneaky after Chef spots Izzy. She attempts to escape, but abruptly, the two engage in a duel in hand-to-hand combat. Izzy breaks away and makes a run for home base, though Chef stops her just before she touches it. They duel yet again in the next season in Alien Resurr-eggtion, where Chef is playing the role of Mama Alien and Izzy faces him in combat using paintball canons. Though she nearly hits him, Chef comes out victorious by hitting her instead. The force of Chef's shot combined with Izzy's expert acting skills make Chef worry that he actually killed her, but when she reveals that she is fine, the two happily laugh about the incident. This may indicate that Chef has gained some respect for Izzy, as she she has held strong against him.
[edit] Total Drama Action
In Riot On Set, Chef takes DJ under his wing, instead, because he is upset at how he is too sensitive and weak despite his great potential in physical strength. Chef says in the confessional that he sees a bit of himself in DJ, but hates how he is too nice all the time. Chef formed an alliance with DJ, where if DJ would have won, Chef would have received half of the prize money. He is seen coaching DJ briefly in Beach Blanket Bogus when DJ is accidentally rendered fully nude in front of everyone. As he runs away, Chef yells at him that the body is nothing to be ashamed of. This alliance was illegal since (as Chris stated on a recap) it involved a host bribing a contestant. It seemed to stem from Chef Hatchet's annoyance at some of the tasks that are asked of him this season. He usually replies to Chris' requests by growling to himself and bearing his teeth. The third time Izzy dueled or did something to chef was in The Aftermath: II (but likely happened in Riot on Set), when a clip is shown of Chef offering a secret alliance to Izzy (implying that he did respect Izzy most of all of the contestants). She takes him by surprise by answering his offer with a flying kick to the stomach.
In The Chefshank Redemption, Chef is seen talking to Chris during the prison break challenge. Much to his surprise, Chris seems to be making smalltalk. Chef's response was not seen in full, but he was clearly confused at Chris' awkward questions. Though it is possible that Chris was simply trying to get back on Chef's good side since Chef had started to harshly defy him prior to this episode.
In The Sand Witch Project, Chef continues to mess with the challenges to ensure that DJ and his team win. His alliance with DJ is strained when DJ expresses guilt over keeping secrets from his team. After being caught messing with the horror movie challenges, Chef is forced to attend a "disciplinary meeting" with the other producers. At the episode's end, just as Chris prepares to eliminate one of the Killer Grips, DJ exposes the alliance to the cast and removes himself from the competition, as it would make his mama proud. Chef tries to shut down DJ but instead finds himself in hot water with Chris and the cast.
In Masters of Disasters, Chef resumes cooking his rancid food for the castmates which, once again, only Owen enjoys. He aids Chris in the disaster challenge, but once again rebels against him by slamming him against a ladder using the travel cart. Also, Chef throws his large manuscript to the cast as debris, smashing Owen's jaw in the process and getting him sent to the hospital. When the cast almost drowns in the submarine challenge, Chris panics but Chef is totally unconcerned, being more focused on the card game he had been playing. This action could be a sign that Chef is still attempting to get revenge on Chris for not paying him (as Chris would've lost his great rich life had the cast mates died and Chef would lose nothing due to a lack of payment). He also might just be a very bitter mood due to his failed alliance with DJ.
It appears that the Producers are keeping a closer eye on Chef in Full Metal Drama. When Owen can't go to the bathroom due to constipation brought about by his blended meals, Chef was forced to serve him blended medicinal shakes "on account of his bad behavior".
It is assumed that Chef Hatchet has a powerful amount of respect for LeShawna since she won a multitude of challenges last season; however, at the end of Ocean's Eight - Or Nine, Chef seems to not care about LeShawna. When Chris, asks Chef if there was anything forgotten. The viewer goes into Chef's mind, thinking about LeShawna, who stayed in a bank vault during the entire episode. Back at Chris, Chef says that they didn't forget anything. In One Million Bucks B.C., Chef seemed to actually feel sorry for the castmates when the golf cart carrying the Grips reward fell into the tar lake, and seemingly was not sarcastic at the loss, saying "Whoops" as a result. This indicates his compassion and attitude towards the campers has improved. He is also part of the Total Drama series legal department.
Chef was forced to wear a bikini in Million Dollar Babies. The cast mates were very disturbed by what they saw but Chef says they were just jealous. Chef cried when Chris reenacted a scene from a badminton movie and wondering why the Olympic committee would not give the Flipper a chance. In the end Chef punched Chris in the face when Chris wanted to box. In the beginning of Super Hero-ld, Chef had to wear a dress and pretend to be a screaming lady that Chris had to save. During the challenge he became Pythonicus with his sidekick cat Dander Boy. His job was to sabotage the cast mates' costumes in the costume challenge and throw bowling balls in the obstacle course.
In The Princess Pride, Chef wears three outfits. He first wears a fairy princess to dub Courtney the princess. He then plays the part of the toothless troll, trying to prevent the cast mates from crossing the bridge during the first challenge. He then wears his control suit to drive the giant mechanical monster. At the end of the episode, he and Chris keep the Beth dolls due to nobody buying them. Chef dresses the Beth dolls up in soldier outfits and plays war with them with a toy cannon (which seems to actually work). Chris then tells him the "right" way to play with dolls.
Chef Hatchet didn't have any dialogue in both Get A Clue and Rock n' Rule (In fact, he didn't appear at all in Get A Clue). In Crouching Courtney, Hidden Owen, Chef Hatchet instructed Courtney and Beth into cooking noodles consisting of the seven deadly fishes known to man after failing the challenge. Chef Hatchet was also seen as a samurai earlier in the episode revealing the robots to the cast. In 2008: A Space Owen, he talks once when he pats Owen's butt, thinking that they are pillows used to fill the hole of the spaceship. He is then seeing whimpering in the confessional. In Top Dog, Chef cooks some type of food, but when Beth and Owen say that "Those scrambled eggs looks ok" and Chef starts laughing, and he falls on his back. After that, he had no dialogue for the rest of the episode.
Chef reveals that he was leaving the show in Mutiny on the Soundstage, after serving Duncan and Beth a five-star breakfast. He says he got himself another job at a cruise ship. He and Chris form a small competition to see which job was more difficult to do. Chef takes Chris's job as host, and Chris is the stagehand. After Beth tells Chef that Chris will miss him, Chef reconsiders. Chef runs back and forth from Duncan to Beth, until he falls asleep at the prison challenge, making Beth fall behind. Chef then agrees to take Duncan and Chris takes Beth. In the end Chef decides to stay.
In The Aftermath: IV, Chef was shown to be annoyed with Chris for making them miss their vacation due to Bridgette and Geoff ruining their show. Later, he is mistaken as DJ due to him being the DJ for the dance-off for Izzy to determine her personal vote. Later, DJ is mistaken as him.[edit] Audition tape
In his audition tape, Chef is mopping the floor of the main lodge. As he's doing that, he's complaining about how his life has turned out. It's unknown whether or not this video was filmed by his own will seeing as how he spent the whole video complaining about his life instead of saying his positive qualities. It's also possible that it was filmed after the events of the Brunch of Disgustingness, since everybody had thrown up everywhere (and it was shown after this episode aired).
He is the only person that isn't a camper that has an audition tape.
[edit] Camp TV
Chef did not appear nor was mentioned at all during the promo of Total Drama Island's prototype series, Camp TV. However, he was shown to have a design vastly different from what he looks like in the Total Drama series. His wardrobe is similar, though his hat is different. His angry face is much more exaggerated, yet at the same time he is much smaller in build. He also seemed to have a much larger mustache. Though he did not appear in the promo, some of his dishes did, such as the grub.
[edit] Trivia
- According to Chris in Not Quite Famous, Chef is a former deejay, veejay and rap artist.
- Chris also refers to Chef as a former army corporal in Riot On Set.
- Chris says that Chef has an "advanced degree in man-hunting" in Hide and Be Sneaky, but it is unknown if he was lying or not.
- Chef tells several war stories in Basic Straining, but when asked which war he was in, he changes the subject and doesn't end up answering the question.
- Chef ran three challenges in the first season of Total Drama Island: in Basic Straining, Hide and Be Sneaky, and Are We There Yeti?.
- The challenge in Are We There Yeti? is the only challenge Chef maintained without any supervision from Chris.
- Chef is the tallest and most likely also the strongest person on the show.
- Chef is the proprietor of Chef's Roadkill Cafe.
- Though the majority of Chef's cooking is repulsive, it has been shown that he can actually cook well at times, such as when he is grilling a steak in Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island! before Izzy rushes over to vomit on it. Chef's cooking also appears more edible in Total Drama Action, although whether this is due to an increase in his skill or in the quality of ingredients at his disposal is debatable.
- He is one of three known characters in the show to have a tattoo; the others being Geoff and Duncan. Neither Geoff or Duncan's is revealed to the viewer, but Chef's is prominently seen on numerous occasions: an anchor, which may prove to be a connection to his alleged services in the armed forces (most likely the navy).
- Chef has more alternate costumes than anyone else in the show; except Chris.
- Chef is the only character in the series to not have his first name revealed.
- Chef has dressed in drag on several occasions:
- He wore a pink ballerina tutu in The Big Sleep.
- He also wore a pink sheep costume in the same episode, but whether or not this is considered cross-dressing is unknown.
- He wears a woman's airline uniform (complete with a curly blond wig) in Phobia Factor.
- He wore a sleek fuchsia dress with a matching chef's hat with diamond earrings and a necklace in I Triple Dog Dare You!
- He continues to wear the dress for several episodes in Total Drama Action. He refused to wear it during the award ceremony in 3:10 to Crazytown but he is later seen wearing it in again in The Sand Witch Project.
- Oddly, In Alien Resurr-eggtion, the contestants laugh when he is in the dress. This includes Owen, Gwen, and Heather, who oddly did not laugh when they first saw him in the dress during I Triple Dog Dare You!
- He wears a frilly, translucent pink southern belle dress complete with a bonnet and fan in 3:10 to Crazytown. He abandons it as well after Chris teases him.
- He wore a small purple bikini and lipstick in Million Dollar Babies, probably his most disturbing costume yet.
- He wore a purple robe and wig in Croutching Courtney, Hidden Owen.
- It is possible that Chef will be a prime antagonist in Total Drama Action, as he joined an alliance with DJ and attempted to join an alliance with Izzy.
- He is the only character with a mustache.
- Besides Cody, he is the only character with a gap between his front teeth.
- In Alien Resurr-eggtion Chef was pretty freaked out when he thought he had killed Izzy, saying "Oh no, not again." Based off this statement, it can be assumed that he may have accidentally killed someone in his past, which may be why he was in prison.
- Chef is shown to wear briefs, as shown in his retro dress, worn in 3:10 to Crazytown, as well as his usual dress, first seen in I Triple Dog Dare You.
- He seems to be very skilled, besides being a chef he was portrayed doing a variety of tasks, like being a referee, a stunt tester, an airplane pilot (not very good), a soldier, doctor, nurse, manhunter, actor (as seen when pretending to be the psycho killer), boot camp instructor, substitute host, harp player, drums player, acting judge, bus driver, restaurant owner, writer, and famous D.J. (D.J. Jazzy Chef, as called by Izzy) as well as dressing as a variety of costumes.
- Chef and Duncan are both in TKO, Cartoon Network's fighting game.
- Chef is the second character in the Total Drama series to go into convulsions, thanks to Owen, he did so in 2008: A Space Owen. Heather was the first in I Triple Dog Dare You. Chef was the only one to do so in Total Drama Action.
- In Mutiny on the Soundstage, Chris stated that Chef sold "street meat" (roadkill) outside of a bus station before he was hired for the show.
- Chef is one of the five characters on the show to have abs. The other four being Chris, Justin, DJ, and Geoff.
