Cartoon Network

This is Total. Drama. Wiki!

Cartoon Network is the television channel that airs Total Drama Island and Total Drama Action in the United States. The channel has cartoons that are comedies and actions. This has been one of the first shows that have been rated PG. Total Drama Island used to air in Har Har Tharsdays before June 11, 2009 once it got replaced by the second season, Total Drama Action. Total Drama Island now runs as part of Total Drama Tuesdays.

[edit] Edits and Changes

During Cartoon Network's broadcast of Total Drama Island, there were many edits to the show. The animation was completely untouched, but there were a number of edits to the dialog. This has caused some problems in acting, as it usually sounds like the voice actors went back to change the words (leading to two different sounding tones in a sentence). On an original trailer for TDI on Cartoon Network, on the top left-hand screen, its rating is "TV-PG-DLS". They kept the D (which stands for "mild suggestive dialogue"), but edited out most of the content that could have gotten it the L ("infrequent language") and the S ("some sexual situations"). However, Total Drama Action was hardly edited.

[edit] Common Edits to the Dialogue (Total Drama Island Only)

  • All use of the word "suck" was replaced with the common word "stink" or "stank", except for in Not Quite Famous where Chris says it. But in Total Drama Action, they oddly don't edit out the word "suck" much.
  • The word "crap" was replaced with a variety of words, however Bridgette did use the word in Not Quite Famous and Trent also used the word during his audition tape in the TDI Rundown.
  • The word "stupid" is usually changed to "foolish", "silly", "lame-o", or some other variation, except when Gwen said it in I Triple Dog Dare You!, despite the fact that several other shows on that network have used this word before.
  • "Shut up!" was often censored to become "Shut it!" in earlier episodes, and "Zip it!" to substitute for Chef saying it in Are We There Yeti?.
  • The word "freak" is often changed to "weirdo" whenever it is brought up, except when Sadie said it in Who Can You Trust?. This has also been used in a number of Cartoon Network shows as well.
  • The word "freakin" is used in almost every episode and is replaced with a different word as well.
  • During the rare occurrence of a censor beep, it is either replaced with PG dialog or is eliminated completely.
  • The word "gitch" is infrequently mentioned, but is always replaced by "drawers", as "gitch" is not a common term used by those in the United States.

[edit] All Edits By Episode (Including Some Outside Cartoon Network)

The edits listed above put aside, there were also numerous edits and changes to the episodes which are listed below:

[edit] Total Drama Island

  • Not So Happy Campers - Part 1‎
    • When Harold says, "You mean this show is at a crappy summer camp instead of some big stage or something?", "crappy" is changed to "yucky".
    • When the Killer Bass are being introduced, Harold says, "It's wicked.. it's like.. amazing!". The word "awesome" is used rather than "wicked".
    • In Gwen's first confessional she says, "Um, okay... So far this sucks."; this is changed to "Um, okay... So far this stinks".
      • On Teletoon's interactive website, Gwen says this line when the cursor is over her, however, on Cartoon Network's interactive website (which is nearly identical to Teletoon's), the line is merely shortened to "Um, okay..."
    • When everyone is receiving their meal in the mess hall, Chef Hatchet calls Owen "fat boy." In the US version, he's called "big guy" instead.
    • After Harold mentions his hypoglycemia, Chef yells "You'll get a whole lot of 'shut the heck up!'". This is changed to "You'll get a whole lot of 'sit your butt down, now!'".
    • When Chris mentions the communal bathrooms, Lindsay says, "Communal bathrooms? But, I'm not Catholic." Chris responds, "Not communion, communal." This is changed and Lindsay says, "Where's the spa? I'm confused.", and Chris says, "Wow, that's a... shocker."
      • Chris's mouth still moves as if he is saying the original line.
      • When Lindsay says her line, it sounds like she was actually looking for the spa in the communal bathrooms, yet she's still at the cabins. Or maybe she just immediately changed the subject.
    • After Duncan remarks on seeing Heather at the campfire, she says to him, "Drop dead, you skeez!"; this is changed to, "Drop dead, you goof!".
    • After commenting on how their first challenge couldn't be hard, DJ and the others see what the challenge actually is and he exclaims, "Oh, (censored)"; this line is cut out entirely.
  • Not So Happy Campers - Part 2
    • Owen says, "I'm going to die now; I'm going to frickin' die now!", the term "frickin'" is changed to "totally".
    • Owen screams, "Oh CRAP!", as he falls down the cliff into the water. This is replaced with more screaming.
      • This edit was undone in the DVD.
    • Near the end of the episode, Gwen (in the confessional stall again) says "This place still sucks.. but now that I'm here, I might as well try to win"; "sucks" is changed to "stinks".
  • The Big Sleep
    • When Chris is reading the book of Canada, he says that the beaver is a "Damn" fine hat. However, when this episode aired on the Cartoon Network, he says it is a "real" fine hat, removing the pun on the word dam.
      • This also leaves confusion as to why Chris put air quotes around the word.
    • For Cartoon Network syndicated airings of the episodes, Chris's line to Justin, "That is so freakin' cool!", is changed to, "That is so crazy incredible". His line "Shut up!" before this is changed to "Get out!"
    • When Eva is about to leave, she says, "Who needs this stupid TV show, anyway?"; when edited, she says "lame-o" instead of "stupid".
  • Dodgebrawl
    • Chris tells Duncan, "You look like crap, dude." and this conversation changes to Chris saying "You look like death, dude."
      • Duncan replies, "Stuff it." It was changed to Duncan telling him, "Stick it."
    • In the confessional stall, Courtney says, "We are so sucking right now!"; the edited version has her saying "stinking" instead of "sucking".
    • Courtney tells Harold "Oh, I believe. I believe you suck!", "Suck" is changed to "Stink" in this instance.
    • The scene where Heather asks the Killer Bass, "How does it feel to suck so much?", was edited. When Heather says this line, the word "suck" was cut without adding a substitute word, oddly making it sound like she said, "How does it feel to so much?"
      • This line is fully retained in its original form when viewing this episode via On Demand or from the DVD, retaining the original "suck" word. However, the rest of the dialog edits made to this episode stay intact.
    • Courtney says her team needs someone who will "crush those stupid Gophers into the dirt". This is edited so that Courtney calls the opposing team "lame-o" over "stupid".
  • Not Quite Famous
    • Bridgette says, "We already know Tyler sucks, what can Duncan do again?"; "sucks" changes to "stinks".
    • When Chris comments on Heather reading Gwen's diary out loud to the entire viewing world, he tells her that was screwed up; this is edited to "messed up".
    • According to captions three lines were intended to be edited:
      • Bridgette saying, "Oh crap!".
        • The captions say that Bridgette said, "Oh, no!".
      • Chris talking about the Killer Bass "sucking" so far in the talent contest.
        • The captions say that Chris says "The Killer Bass are totally losing so far."
      • Gwen saying to Cody, "What are you? Some kind of freak?".
        • The captions say that Gwen asks Cody if he's "Some kind of animal?".
    • Also, when Owen is burping the alphabet, the last letter (Z) sounded like the Canadian pronunciation (Zed) instead of the American (Zee)
  • Phobia Factor
    • Duncan says "Shut up!" after Courtney taunts him about his phobia. This is changed to "Shut it!". It is later repeated with Courtney at the end of the scene.
    • Trent exclaims, "Oh, crap! Gwen!", when he realizes he forgot to dig her out from the sand; this is changed to "Oh no! Gwen!".
    • Courtney says "Shut up!" after Duncan taunts her about faking his hook story in the previous episode; this line is edited to "Shut it!".
  • Up The Creek
    • Geoff asks DJ if he "screwed up" regarding the clay bowl he made to win over Bridgette and DJ affirms that he did; this is changed to "messed up".
    • When the Screaming Gophers are cornered by the eagle-like creatures, Owen says, "Oh, crap"; this is changed to, "Oh, man".
  • Paintball Deer Hunter
    • In the original version, Heather considers Chef's eggs to be "crappy"; this was edited to "yucky".
    • Owen shouts, "Crap! Snake!", when he suddenly sees one while hiding in the bushes; he only says, "Ack! Snake!" when the line is edited.
    • Beth says, "Go ahead; shoot me. You can't make today any suckier!"; this is changed to "stinkier".
    • Heather originally considers the challenges "lame and stupid", opposed to the edited "lame and foolish".
  • If You Can't Take The Heat...
    • During the recap of the previous episode, Chris says Cody got the crap beat out of him by a bear. In the US version, he says " the snot" beaten out of him. Chris then refers to Cody "getting the shaft"; this is changed to "getting the axe".
    • Duncan tells Harold he's leaving his "gitch lying around"; this is changed to "drawers lying around".
    • Heather warns Beth to try and not screw up in the challenge, inferring to the previous episode's incident; this is edited to "mess up".
    • A frustrated Heather mutters, "It's like I'm on a team of morons!"; "Morons" is changed to "Losers".
    • Chris comments that the ribs the Screaming Gophers made sucked; he then says they stank instead.
    • In the confessional, Heather says, "And Owen completely screwed up everything for us!"; "screwed up" is changed to "messed up".
    • Before Beth walks the Dock of Shame, Heather says it was stupid of her to take the tiki doll from Boney Island; she then says it was silly of her to do so.
    • Before Geoff returns Harold's clothes to him, he says, "What the heck? I believe him!"; "heck" is changed to "hey".
  • Who Can You Trust?
    • Many of Gwen's lines during the rock climbing challenge were edited when this episode aired on Cartoon Network. After she sees that her underwear is exposed while she's climbing, she says, "Skip it." instead of "Screw it." Also, when she's at the top of the mountain and she's trying to cover her underwear, she says "Man..." instead of "Crap!".
    • Courtney calls Sadie a "moron" when she tries to tell her that the William Tell challenge is over. In the Cartoon Network version, she calls her "Einstein".
    • Heather said, "Freakin' stinging jellyfish!" while walking to the infirmary, but in the American version, it is changed to "Nasty stinging jellyfish!"
    • Sadie calls everyone "MARSHMALLOW-EATING FREAKS!!" oddly, this is not changed.
  • Basic Straining
    • Courtney tells Duncan to stop acting like a screw-up, but when this episode aired in the US, it is changed to mess-up.
    • As Courtney leaves Duncan says "Aw man this sucks!" but in the American version he says "Aw man this stinks!"
    • Courtney´s explicitly puking scene was removed in Latin America.
    • When Harold is writing and Chef takes it away he says "Crap!" but in the American version he says "Gosh!" Although, this was unedited in the UK.
    • When Courtney and Duncan are in the fish cabin, Duncan says, "Feel like ditching this crap for PB and J." In the American version, "crap" was changed to "stuff".
  • X-Treme Torture
    • Trent tells DJ that "The best glimpse of heaven's on the way into hell"; strangely, all of this line is intact in the US airing, even when it is shown during the early afternoon.
      • Though it could have been biblical and not profanity.
    • LeShawna, priding herself on having a secret admirer, rhetorically asks Gwen and Bridgette "Do you know anyone else here with a booty as luscious as an apple?". The American version changes this to "Do you know anyone else here with a kick-butt attitude... like mine?".
    • After Harold saw Heather's breasts, he says "boobies"; saying the same in the confession stall. In the US airing, he says "booyah" in both instances.
    • After Harold leaves, Geoff asks LeShawna if Harold actually did see her "boobies". LeShawna then angrily asks Harold from afar whose "boobies" he saw. In these instances, the word "chest" replaces "boobies".
      • Despite the above edits, they did retain the mentioning of "boobies" when Harold announced it and Bridgette inquired him about it. Heather's referral to her own "boobs" is also unedited in the US version.
  • Brunch of Disgustingness
    • Owen says he will eat anything, even his own "gitch" if he has to. This is changed to "drawers" in the US version.
    • "Brunch of Disgustingness" is slightly censored due to the scene when the campers are eating "beef testicles." In America, Chef and Owen say "beef meatballs," and the male campers react the same way they did in Canada.
      • However, the general message is still sent across in the Cartoon Network airing, as they retain Geoff confirming that the "beef meatballs" are from castrated bulls and when Gwen says "cohoneys."
      • Also, in the Latin American dub, the food was called "Testiculos de Toro", meaning "bull testicles."
  • No Pain, No Game
    • Eva calls LeShawna "thunder-thighs" when LeShawna stands up for Bridgette. In the US version, this is changed to "girlfriend"
      • This edit makes LeShawna's line "No one disses Shawnee's thighs!" nonsensical, considering Eva never mentions LeShawna's thighs in the edited version.
    • Gwen calls Eva a "freak" as she votes her off the island. This is changed to "weirdo" in Cartoon Network's airing.
  • Search and Do Not Destroy
    • Every mention of Heather telling Trent that his music sucks is changed to "stinks".
    • When Owen tries to get his key from the bear, he says "Oh crap!" several times; in the US airing, this is changed to "Oh no!".
      • This change is also applied when he says "Crap infinity!", which is changed to "No infinity!".
  • That's Off The Chain!
    • Geoff, realizing he missed breakfast, says "Aw, crap!". This is changed to "Aw, man!" in the Cartoon Network version.
    • After being introduced to the Arts & Crafts Center, Duncan says "More like the Arts & Crap Center."; crap is changed to junk in the US airing, thus ruining the joke.
    • Although Lindsay cursing out Heather was censored by a lengthy beep in Canada, dialog was added in Cartoon Network's second airing of the episode, replacing the censor beep with "No good, selfish, heartless, pushy, bossy, mean, bully of a girl!". Regardless of this, the blurred image of Lindsay giving Heather the middle finger is retained.
      • Although in the recap on the Cartoon Network video it says "Lindsay calls Heather a lot of words we can't repeat", retaining the lengthy censor beep.
      • The long bleep was surprisingly kept when it was aired on Jetix in the United Kingdom. It was the only scene that was left uncensored throughout the whole episode, while all the others were still censored just like the American Cartoon Network version. However, censor bleeps are normally kept in in the UK.
    • Heather tells Duncan all he ever does is scare the "crap" out of everyone; this is edited to "snot".
  • Hook, Line, and Screamer
    • When Owen arrives in the production tent, with Chef as the psycho killer right behind him, he says to Chris, "We're freakin' dead!" In America, "freakin" is changed to "totally".
    • When Duncan sets Gwen's chart on fire, Gwen shouts "Holy crap!". In the US version, she says "Oh man!".
  • Wawanakwa Gone Wild!
    • When Gwen says "I hate this friggin' show!", friggin' was changed to "lame-o" on Cartoon Network.
  • Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon
    • During the recap of the last episode, Chris remarks some of the fellow campers were "sucking" at capturing their assigned animal. This is changed to "stinking".
      • Also in the recap, Chris recalls the campers who have already been eliminated to this point in order, saying it "sucks" to be them. This is changed to "stinks".
    • Owen insults Heather in the confessional stall late in the episode, calling her the "The meanest, the nastiest, the (censored) in all of Kalamazoo". Cartoon Network replaces the censor beep with "biggest cold-hearted meanie".
  • Haut Camp-Ture
    • Trent says "Can you believe this resort is right around the corner from that crappy campground?". In the US version, "crappy" is changed to "lame-o".
    • When describing her experience at camp, Eva simply says it sucked. In the US version, she says it stank.
    • When Izzy loses her bikini bottom, she says "Oh crap, it is!". Like Owen in Search and Do Not Destroy, this is changed to "Oh no!" in the US airing.
    • Lindsay says "Maybe if I develop an eating disorder or get my boobs done, I'll get on the cover!" while celebrating being featured on a magazine. In the US, this is changed to "get an acting coach and get my hair and nails done".
    • When Courtney finally finds Harold and starts to attack him, Trent says "Poor sucker." whereas in the US version, he says "Little guy."
  • Camp Castaways
    • Heather teases Gwen, saying "Sulking like a big sap won't bring LeShawna back." This is edited to "Frowning like a big baby won't bring LeShawna back."
    • Duncan says he is stuck on the island with two hot chicks, though he finds them "completely psycho". This is edited to Duncan being stuck with two cool girls and finding them "completely annoying".
    • Heather snaps at Duncan, saying "In your dreams, perv!". "Perv" is changed to "nerd" in the US version.
    • The movie the props were originally made for actually had a name in the original version: Big Assic Park. It is simply referred to as "that dinosaur movie" in the US version.
    • Owen bemoans that he will never be able to fulfill his "Owen gets jiggy" fantasies. This is edited to "Owen gets famous" fantasies.
  • Are We There Yeti?
    • At the end of Chef Hatchet's recap, he says "Sit back, shut up."; in the US version, he says "Sit back, zip it.".
    • Gwen tells Heather "Let's see what happens when you shut up already!". "Shut up" is edited to "close it" in the US version.
    • When Owen has a flashback of his cliff dive from the first challenge, when he says "I'm going to die now; I'm going to frickin' die now!", and of course, the term "frickin'" is changed to "totally".
      • Also, when he dives, he screams "OH CRAP!" However, this is replaced with more screaming in the US version, as was the case with the original airing.
    • When the campers arrive back, Chef Hatchet mumbles "Aw crap.". This is edited to "Aw crud." in the US version.
    • At the end of the episode, Owen is in the confessional stall musing about how it's now down to him and "two hot chicks". This is edited to "two cool girls" in the US version.
  • I Triple Dog Dare You!
    • After Chris reveals the dare challenge to the final 3 campers, Heather, who was annoyed, said back to him, "Why don't we just do Seven Minutes of Heaven in a skanky basement closet?" in Canada. In America, "skanky" is changed to "tacky".
      • The "Seven Minutes of Heaven" part was not edited out.
    • After Gwen earns her first Freebie, she says "Just give me the fr-frickin' freebie!"; in the US, it is changed to a "stupid" freebie. Since she said it slowly, it sounds like she says "fr-stupid."
      • This edit to the dialogue is extremely controversial, as "stupid" is usually a word that is also edited out in the United States version.
    • A sympathizing Owen says "Twice in a row's gotta suck" to Heather before she performs her second dare. "Suck" is replaced with "hurt" in the US version.
    • Chris says "So frickin' sick!" in the confessional stall; in the Cartoon Network airing, frickin' is changed to "totally".
    • After throwing up in the confessional stall, Chris asks himself "Is there nothing these freaks won't do?!". "Freaks" is changed to "weirdos".
  • The Very Last Episode, Really!
    • In the confessional, Gwen says being at Camp Wawanakwa for eight weeks sucked. In the US version, she says it stank.
    • When Gwen says "Nice rug." when she sees Heather's wig, to which Heather replies "Oh, bite me.". In the US version, she says "Oh, shut it.".
      • There by, it doesn't explain why Izzy (who is behind her), is leaning over her and has a hungry expression.
    • While sliding down the pole, Owen shouts "Oh, crap! That hurts!". "Crap" is changed to "crud" in the US version.
    • Gwen says, "I'm going to die now. I'm gonna freakin' die." (mirroring what Owen said in the first episode); and as such, this was changed to "I'm going to totally die." again.
    • Owen says "Alexander the freakin' great!" originally; in the US version, "freakin'" is replaced with "insanely".
    • Heather calls Gwen a "Sucker" in the Canadian version; in the U.S. she called her a "Doofus."
    • When Lindsay accidentally turns on the fan in Heather's direction, blowing off her wig, she angrily shouts "Can't you freaks do anything right?!". In the US version, "freaks" is changed to "fools".
    • At the end of the episode when Owen receives the final marshmallow, he says, "I'll treasure it for the rest of my life. Oh, screw it! I can have all the marshmallows I want now!" In the US version, the entire phrase, "Oh, screw it" is replaced by "whatever".

[edit] Total Drama Action

By the time Total Drama Action aired on Cartoon Network, there weren't as many edits. There were four edits in the first twenty-two episodes of Total Drama Action as opposed to seventy-one in the first twenty-two episodes of Total Drama Island. Suck, crap, stupid, shut up, screw up, freak, freaking, censor beeps, and gitch are not edited anymore; however, these words are rarely used on Total Drama Action.

Related to this, 6teen had rarely got edits.

  • Alien Resurr-eggtion
    • In the Make-Up Confessional, when Harold says that LeShawna isn't over him, the phrase "like she's un-pantsing me with her eyes" is changed to "like she's romancing me with her eyes".
  • 3:10 to Crazytown
    • When Harold says, "I have cow boobies on my head", "boobies" is changed to "udders".
      • If downloaded on iTunes, this line is still kept.
  • The Aftermath: I
    • This episode went mostly unedited except for the noises Geoff and Bridgette made after the lights were turned out being cut out of the Cartoon Network version, as they may be found sexual in nature to some audiences.
  • The Aftermath: II
    • Surprisingly, no noticeable edits.
      • Notably, Gordon's dialogue which contained bleeps was not edited, making it the only episode in America to contain dialogue bleeps currently.
The Cartoon Network logo is on a beaver.
  • Rock n' Rule
    • No noticeable edits.
      • Oddly, "bite me" is not edited.

[edit] Other Info

Almost every single episode of Total Drama Island was censored in some way by Cartoon Network, despite putting up a PG rating warning at the beginning of the show and the end of each commercial break.

Surprisingly, 6teen, a show made by the creators of Total Drama Island and having similar dialog content, is completely unedited except for one dialogue that included the word "scorniest" (it was later changed to "scoring-est"), and the pilot episode, where Jonesy said "Getting the second base with Jill Anderson." Even the theme song, which contains "Thank God" in the lyrics, is left untouched. Many childrens' networks go out of their way to eliminate any mention of a particular religion or deity. Recent episodes of Total Drama Action have shown that Cartoon Network's edits are getting lighter.

[edit] DVD

Total Drama Island's first season was released on DVD on August 18th. Despite claiming that the DVD features all twenty seven episodes and cast interviews, Total Drama Drama Drama Island was not included (instead being replaced by the TDI Rundown), and the cast interviews are really the character auditions. Many people weren't happy at this. Some of the edits were removed and some original dialogue was retained, but most edits were left in. Despite this, an advertisement from Amazon.com had suggested that the DVD would be uncut.

[edit] Noods

A Nood Heather, along with a few other characters.

Cartoon Network also features Noods, human-like creatures that are Cartoon Network's advertising staples, that have been made into various Total Drama Island characters. Heather, Gwen, DJ, Chris, Harold, Cody, Trent, Chef and the Bear have all been created as Noods. If balls of color hits a Nood, they turn into whatever color that ball was, or they change into a camper who wears that color. For example, a Nood that gets hit with a ball the color of Heather's shirt will turn into Heather, or a Nood that touches something blue will turn the color blue.

[edit] Games and Website

The Cartoon Network website has games and a show page for Total Drama Island and Total Drama Action. Many games caught on a ton of people like: The Big Picture, Best. Game. Ever. and Total Drama Island: Totally Interactive. For the second season, the show page featured Total Drama Action EXTRA, a website in a blog/newspaper format. When Total Drama Island was pushed off Har Har Tharsdays, oddly the show airing time was the same and wasn't changed.
